Be Reborn: New Moon in Aquarius, Solar Eclipse, and Dreams of Tomorrow

This Thursday, February 15th, at 1:05 p.m., the Moon becomes new in cardinal air sign Aquarius. New Moons are always a moment of release, a fresh start, a cosmic tabula rasa. That particular feeling will be amplified this time around, as the New Moon coincides with a solar eclipse. As the Moon casts her shadow on the Sun, we will be called to let go of what does not serve us, to turn to our shadow selves and nod in acknowledgment. The stars know what you cling to, what you dread losing the most. It is time to unfold your fear-barbed arms and set some of that baggage free.

Aquarius is ruled by two planets, Saturn, keeper of time, rules, and the tangible, and Uranus, electric planet of invention, spontaneity, and surprise.

Combine the influence of these two powerful celestial bodies with the solar eclipse, and there is a chance that you will be not gently coaxed out of your stubborn attachments, but shocked out of them. The combined influence of Saturn and Uranus can feel like taking bitter medicine to cure an ailment. But ultimately, what burns the tongue can revive the whole body. Keep this in mind as we move through the week.

There are also several important astrological aspects to keep in mind for the 15th, which serve to heighten the intensity of this New Moon period. By making ourselves aware of this celestial energy, we can prepare ourselves for an intense fresh start to our cycle.

At 4 a.m. on the 15th, the Moon in Aquarius squares (a tense aspect) Jupiter, planet of luck and prosperity. With the Moon, ruler of emotions, in an uncomfortable position to Jupiter, we will be more liable to make poor financial judgements. We may suffer a feeling of emotional weakness, hopelessness, or even spiritual doubts in the small hours of the morning. Deep breaths to those of you who may feel insomniac at this point. The energy softens at 7:07 a.m., when Mercury forms a sextile (positive) angle to Uranus, the aforementioned planet of surprise. With an easy flow between the planet of communication (Mercury) and Uranus, we will feel an amplification of our language powers, electricity flows from dream to brain, from the underworld to the mouth. Tend to that dream journal. There is a heightened possibility for sudden change based on what you say—be mindful.

At 9:40 a.m., the Moon forms a sextile angle to Uranus. Use your rapidly changing feelings to push out of old cycles of being. Break free. Those fantasies you have about independence and personal growth will come to the fore and be nourished by this astrological aspect. Feel this power, wear it as armor. This change you sense is real, and this is a perfect moment to take a bold step. Next (this day will be exhausting), Venus forms a sextile angle to Saturn at 3:19 p.m., making you crave deep, real connections. Depth, truth, mastery of love. Frivolous connections will be sacrificed at the altar. This is the perfect time to cut ties with individuals who hold you back. If they’re not supporting you, you likely know this already. The scariest part of letting go is just that. The growth that comes after has the power, at this time, to change your life.

The last two aspects that come up for us on the 15th are more karmic in nature than those listed above, the first of which being the Moon semi-sextile Chiron. In Greek mythology, Chiron was the centaur herbalist, the healer who could soothe anyone’s wounds but his own. Astrologically, the asteroid Chiron represents our own unhealed wound, the point where we need to find softness, kindness, and focus our transformative powers. Chiron talks to us about the work we need to do to heal ourselves, and how we are able to heal the hurt around us. With the Moon aspecting Chiron, a pathway opens up between our emotions and these long buried karmic wounds.

Let howls of pain bubble up to the surface, my dears. We need to scream them out in order to process them, to find our forward motion, to make progress. We will be encouraged to perform rituals of excision due to the Sun’s proximity to the celestial South Node, an astrological point of interest that describes release, the past, your previous life’s work. If you feel called to build a pyre to your past self, build it high and let it burn.

The key to surviving this wave of astrological activity will be to focus your attention again on the sign of Aquarius, where the Sun and Moon will both reside on February 15th. Aquarius is impersonal but progressive, sharply intelligent but humanistic and inclusive. Aquarius dreams of the future. Her utopia is one of equality amongst humankind, one where there is space for all and room for intellectual growth. Find connection to the group, your own or a new one, this week. Find ways to rekindle your passion for social progress, for reinventing our societal norms. Focusing on that which is greater than our individual hurt will be the key to harmoniously resetting yourself, this New Moon.

With love, I wrap you in a blanket of stars.
