Full Moon in Sagittarius: Flower of Intellect

Today the Moon is Full in mutable, masculine, fire sign Sagittarius, the sign of exploration of the higher mind, bringing us themes of expansion, and intellectual boundlessness. In Greco-Roman myth, Sagittarius was a constellation created by Chiron, the wounded healer. The starry centaur’s arrow guided Jason and his Argonauts across a wine dark sea. Today, the sign represents that adventurous spirit and exploration of the unknown. Sagittarius looses arrows across the cosmos. Full Moon in Sagittarius invites us to connect with visions of our highest selves, ones that spring not from the heart or body, but from the sharpened, diamond-plated mind.

Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, planet of luck, beneficence, justice, and higher learning. A planet simultaneously grace-giving and dangerous, there is an element of the trickster archetype here. Jupiter has the power to create new worlds. To bring you power and money. To make you famous, a golden overachiever. Jupiter is a king. But like any king, Jupiter is intoxicated by power. As Sagittarius’s ruler, Jupiter encourages the sign to explore the world around them, to thirst for knowledge, to seek out justice for their compatriots. Sagittarius when balanced finds harmony, and unites the high with the low. When the energy of Sagittarius is amplified, things can get a bit unwieldy, excessive, like Jupiter at a banquet.

Full Moon in Sagittarius conjures the image of a cup of fire overflowing, flame licking the sides of the chalice and the hand of the cupbearer. The fire brings golden light, symbolic of new ways of seeing, newly illumined paths, or strokes of keen insight. With the flame’s glow, we are indeed powerful. But like any fire, there is a chance of being burned. Full Moon in Sagittarius can scorch the skin of our realities, should we not hold the flame just right. Jupiter, like a flame, expands, but becomes careless with its boundaries, and can dominate us when it is out of balance.

The Full Moon in Sagittarius forms an opposition to the Sun in Gemini. The Sun in Gemini sits in the Third House, the house of learning, communication, and growth in short bursts. The Moon in Sagittarius is full in the Ninth House, the house of the high mind, of intellectual conquest, of sharpened arrows that pierce truth. Thus we see that this binary, or polarity, brings us themes of the high mind versus the low mind. We will be encouraged to figure out how to ripen fruits of our intellect. We will be inspired to start new projects that require the focus of a sharp wit and curious mind. At the same time, our unconscious mind will be talking to us, tugging on our sleeve, visiting our dreams. This is a time to find a way to translate your unconscious desires into conscious action in the world around you. You have been daydreaming long enough. Bridge the gap between dream act and reality; you are ready.

On this day we will see a grand trine, a stabilizing, flowing astrological aspect made up of three planets. It harmonizes the energies of Jupiter (in Scorpio), Neptune (in Pisces), and Venus (in Cancer). A gorgeous, lush, and watery balance to the firebrand of a Full Moon in Sagittarius, the grand trine is here to bring balance to our emotions as our intellects leap to new heights. Today’s energy brings extra heightened psychic sensitivity due to this prominent water trine. The planets of luck and excess (Jupiter), dreams and fog (Neptune), and love and aesthetics (Venus) are linked, arms clasped in a watery embrace. This is available for you if the Full Moon threatens to carry you away in the fires of your mind.

Encouraging us to make leaps of faith (and then keep shooting arrows into the night sky) will be the Sun trine Mars. Another inspirational, flowing aspect, this time between the luminary of our ego and the planet of action and conquest. It is time now to step forward. Mars lends you his shield, and in dressing for battle, you become tall—taller than a tall man, taller than Aries (as Sappho says). Give yourself permission to grow so that your dream becomes reality, and your fears become mere shadow.

We will also see the Moon form a helpful trine to the North Node, an astrological component that shows us the karmic path forward. Let yourself be led, through the maze of your emotional mind, away from the past and toward the future. Abandon old notions of selfhood and failure, burn paper with the names of your enemies, decide to decide that you exist in the future, freeing yourself from the past. Unburden yourself, dear one. The galloping hooves of Sagittarius are drum-beats to break you from your sleep. In the muck of this world, don’t forget that your imagination and intellect are your sharpest swords, your most fleet-feathered darts.

Bow and arrow slung over my shoulder,

Your Celestial Hermit
