Mid -Summer Magic

As I write this, the sun has just risen on this Summer Solstice day. Everyone else besides the dogs and me are in bed and the street is quiet.

The solstices are times that mark the longest and shortest days, and as such there are magics in these days. Of course, there is magic in the everyday too, but the energy at the solstices is something else really, and I love these mornings when I’m the only one awake.

The sun is up and bright and a breeze blows through the boughs of the trees, making them whisper to one another and to me. The cherries are just beginning to turn red, and the strawberries are ripening, some are ready to be picked, full and juicy and alluringly red. The elder flower is almost past it’s best and soon the berries will come.

I sit down beneath the cherry tree and let my eyes drift around the garden I have inherited. I say inherited because it isn’t mine, not really. I live here, yes, but the trees and the plants and the birds were here first. I am the guest. I have been gifted the honour of being the guardian to this place and I take it seriously indeed.

I could lose myself in nature. The blackbirds song pierces the morning air like flute music, and the sunlight dapples through the leaves, a golden green shimmer amongst the darker greens of the shadow parts and my soul flutters and swells with the beauty of this world, of the small things that others miss. Isn’t that the essence of the witch, seeing those things, the patterns of life and of death and all of those things in between that others miss or ignore?

Sitting here beneath the tree, thinking of the mid summer and the celebrations that it will bring for my kind, for witches and pagans and occultists, for all know of the magic of this day, makes me smile. Mid summer is a time of joy, and traditionally was the time when those country folk would merry make, for the hard work of preparing the land and sowing the seed is over and the hard work that will be the harvest is still some weeks away, and so mid summer is a time to kickback and enjoy life. The dog days of summer are upon us, and the schools and colleges will soon close their dusty doors for the summer. Oh to be young at mid summer!

On this mid summers day, I will be cooped up inside at work, so these moments outside in the splendor of nature are sacred to me. I fill my lungs with the clean and fresh air, scented with the roses, both wild and cultivated, that grow in the garden. Tonight though, the mid summers night will be mine. I’ll drink the elderflower wine I’ve been brewing these last month or two, it won’t quite be ready, but what better drink to have. I’ll rub Datura ointment into my skin and enjoy the blooms divine scent, for she flowers in the night, and then I’ll await the fair folk and dance with them in the dark.

Enjoy your solstice, wherever you may spend it, and if you’re reading this after the day, then I hope your mid summers was filled with magic!
