New Moon in Libra: Harmony as Courage

Monday, October 8th, 2018, brings us a New Moon in cardinal air sign Libra, the sign of justice and harmony. After the past two weeks of patriarchal mayhem and upheaval, this New Moon brings us opportunities to reconnect with one another in a stabilizing way. It encourages us to bring balance back into the fold, to quiet ourselves, momentarily, so that we might recalibrate as we move forward into our next cycle.

Libra is the famous sign of balance. Symbolized by the a set of scales, this sign is ruled by Venus, goddess of aesthetics, love, and resources. Given the sign’s romantic ruler, Libra is renown for her love of the luxurious and the beautiful. There is a delicacy here in Libra that the other signs don’t quite possess. An aesthetic sensitivity which derives from from her Venusian affiliations. But even more so than her power of cultivating beautiful interiors, Libra’s strength involves harmonizing opposites, bringing two opposing forces into agreement, balancing energies in the bright bowls of her golden scales.

When the Moon is New in Libra, we find the Sun conjunct the Moon. As such, our conscious, ego-oriented minds (Sun), and our unconscious, emotional selves (Moon) come into contact. When the Moon is dark in her newness, we are able to find a harmonious energy struck between our heart and our head. Take this time to collect yourself, to center your own personal energy, and to embody the themes of Libra in all her harmonious power.

This New Moon comes to us at a time when the world seems to be, yet again, on fire. This witch is reeling from headline after headline that shows us that the dying roars of the patriarchy are coming loud and clear. In the midst of all of this, I am sending you, dear readers, love and support, and the reminder that you are not alone. But with that said, we are all weary. Many tears have been shed this week in fury and heartbreak at the reminder, played out on a national stage, that women’s experiences are not to be taken seriously.

I know you are tired. John Cage once said, “If someone is sleepy, let him go to sleep.” The New Moon is here for you to find some rest and recuperation. The quietude of the Moon’s darkness provides a velvet blanket, Venusian and restorative, for you to dream beneath. Take this time to truly nurture yourself. Take this time to also check in with your friends and loved ones. Libra is all about harmony with our fellow humans. Venus provides featherbeds to those who need a break. New Moon in Libra is a reminder to cultivate personal love ritual as well as conjure strength to fight the unfairness of the world.

We’ll have a few activated transits tomorrow, beginning with the Moon square Pluto, which sees us struggle with what lies beneath the surface of our emotional selves. Old feelings come up for reevaluation. Be mindful of how you speak and act, as sensitivities are heightened today. Mars also squares Venus which is currently retrograde in Scorpio, and this transit gives our romantic relationships a little jolt of energetic tension. Try to be soft with yourself and your lover. Saturn, planet of structure and boundaries, forms a stabilizing trine to Uranus, planet of innovation and progress. This is the perfect time to translate your dreams into realities, as Saturn lends a supportive hand to the visionary energy of Uranus. This transit is here to support you as you make plans for the future, allowing you to take what once seemed fantastical and turn it into something concrete. Venus also forms a harmonious trine with Neptune (also retrograde), giving us a dreamy, artistic, creative and intuitive energy. This is the perfect day to connect with your inner Venus, with the Moon in Libra. If you have an art practice, nurture it today.

It is important to go within to find the strength we need to keep fighting. Remember that Libra is not simply Venusian harmony. Balance is about fairness, and fairness is about justice. In the tarot, the Justice card is associated with Libra, and in some depictions of the card, we see our seated figure holding a set of scales aloft. With the Moon New in Libra, we go within to cultivate inner harmony. We do this to be able to then turn to the outside world and advocate for justice for all.

With love, I hold space for you, and wish you a peaceful New Moon.

In pursuit of harmony,

Celestial Hermit
