Full Moon in Taurus | Green Velvet Underground

On October 24th at 7:33am, the Moon will enter Taurus, just a day after the Sun enters Scorpio. At 9:45am the Moon opposes the Sun, initiating our Full Moon in Taurus and starting off Scorpio season with a planetary activation of the 2nd and 8th Houses, the houses of material resources and the transformative shadow, respectively. Write this down, it’s a medieval alchemical dictum:

For a tree’s branches to reach to heaven, its roots must reach to hell. Though the tall branches of the lilac tree grow upward and bear fragrant petals, the tree would be nothing without her underworld roots.

This is the message of our Full Moon in Taurus.

Taurus is an earth sign ruled by Venus. Symbolized by the bull, this sign rules the second astrological house and is concerned primarily with the cultivation of resources. Resources for Taurus first and foremost are material and financial. This sign revels in divine color and texture, and evokes dreams of green velvet, golden dish ware, gorgeous tapestries, deep featherbeds. With that said, resources do not just have to be material, for matters that are emotional, intellectual, and even spiritual can become a resource to us in this life. Taurus gathers all materials to her, all resources, in anticipation of the future. It is the sign that knows both when and how to plant the seeds so that she can watch her garden grow, wild. Think Empress energy.

The Moon is considered “Full” when she is exactly opposite, or 180° away from, the Sun. This initiates a particular kind of lunar energy, a feeling of expansion, an over-the-top sensibility, as the Sun, which represents our ego or essential self, opposes the Moon, which symbolizes our emotional self.

With the Sun at 1° Scorpio, the eighth astrological house, ruled by Scorpio, glows with solar power. In Libra season, we worked on themes of partnership, balance, social matters, issues of justice. Scorpio season sweeps in, swathed in black latex, and shows us the power of retribution.

Scorpio has been on our minds this year, with Jupiter making his transit through the sign, stirring up matters of great importance on a societal level—the socio-political unrest we have witnessed this year is one symptom of that. On a recurring basis, the mask of social nicety has fallen away, and truths, ugly ones, have been revealed to those fighting for equality. Though heartbreaking in so many ways, this transit has served an important purpose. A good many of us have been aware of society’s festering illnesses for so very long. Jupiter in Scorpio has shaken the rest of our fellow humans out of complacency. We see the truth—that this system is not broken, but rather was designed in a prejudiced manner from the beginning. Jupiter in Scorpio has banished our naiveté and demanded that we fight for the exposure of these truths, and then fight for the restoration of justice. It has been exhausting. I hope you, reading this, are feeling supported.

Scorpio season in general is a time where we look past surfaces and plunge ourselves into the depths of the psyche, the soul, the shadow. This is the time of year when the veil famously thins between our world and the next, and as trees drop their leaves, we are encouraged to shed our old selves.

Keep in mind that Scorpio has three symbols, the scorpion, the eagle, and the phoenix. The scorpion represents Scorpio’s ability to live in the darkness, to scavenge the forest floor, to paralyze enemies with a single sting. The eagle shows Scorpio’s ability to transcend, to nobly acknowledge that life requires sacrifice. The phoenix, of course, represents Scorpio’s most potent power, and that is her ability to regenerate herself. This is the only sign who can throw herself onto her own funeral pyre and rise, red plumed and broad winged, anew. This is the lesson of the season, to let our old selves die so that we can rejuvenate our perspective, our strength, and our soul.

So let’s talk about this Full Moon. The astrological binary between Taurus and Scorpio encourages us to take stock of our material resources, and to let go what truly does not serve. To probe deeper into the elusive truth. To tear off the masks of your enemies and realize that perhaps they are not as strong as you thought they were.

Taurus wants you to cultivate, to nurture, to enjoy. This is a powerful Full Moon for any manifestation work you have been waiting to do, since Taurus is an earth sign and thus has material pull. The Sun in Scorpio wants you to take stock of what you are calling in, and to be critical, to examine with great honesty the state of your soul. The Taurus / Scorpio binary itself is a representation of birth and death, of expansion and withdrawal. Use this energy for yourselves, my dears. It is here for you.

This will also be a day of powerful transits, and we will feel their effects (as we always do after Full or New Moons) for the next two weeks. The Moon in Taurus will sit conjunct Uranus, both at 1°. Uranus is the planet of invention, electricity, and surprise. Our emotional centers will likely be zapped by some Uranian force on this day, so be sure to prepare and aim to stay grounded. Uranus brings us sudden change, and sometimes these changes are for the best. Sometimes, however, they are truly uncomfortable. Remember that you are being pushed onto the next plane of your existence, and that in order to receive, we also must release, molt, change.

The Sun, Venus, Mercury, and Jupiter will all be in Scorpio, and the Moon will oppose both the Sun and Venus, which is currently retrograde. Due to the opposition between the Moon and our retrograde Venus, this will be a day where Venus retrograde energy is amplified or intensified. If you have been nostalgic, thinking of someone you once knew, or lamenting some loss of love, these feelings may be heightened today. Venus is about halfway through her retrograde phase, which ends on November 16th. Remember that these retrogrades serve the purpose of letting us pause and re-evaluate what we have wrought. We do not need to keep every love that enters our heart. You are whole in spite of your loss.

Venus retrograde in Scorpio will also form an energizing sextile angle to Saturn, king of boundaries. Our love-drive will be heightened, or our desire for harmony, beauty, and luxury deepened. Saturn is the planet of dry wit and common sense, so we won’t be risking it all for love, but we might be stimulated to really ask ourselves what we are getting from the foundations we’ve built in our emotional lives, and what might work better in the future.

With so many planets in Scorpio, we are questioning the nature of established power, and slowly coming into our own. With the Moon full in Taurus, we are alchemizing what Scorpio discards and putting it to use as a way of cultivating resources, and manifesting the new. The most beautiful gardens are fertilized by rich compost, which is just discarded organic decay. Scorpio knows how to eliminate dead matter, and Taurus knows how to grow lilac trees. We need both the tree and her chthonic roots. Keep this close to your heart when the Moon is full in Taurus. This lunation is a turning point for us; we let the scorpion Sun guide us into the depths of the underworld, and we remember that the Moon, our mother, awaits us on the other side.
