  • New a moon in Leo: Cultivation of the Light ~ “A quick backward glance This month has brought up so much — pain, pleasure, darkness, anxiety, as well as a glimpse of the future. I’m happy to say that I believe brighter days are ahead of us, that is, if we tend to the lessons brought to our attention by this most recent Mercury retrograde and our eclipses in Cancer and Capricorn. Many lessons around the balance between maternal and paternal force came up this month, with the New Moon in Cancer lighting up a portal to a matriarchal future, one in which we focus on nurturing one another rather than tearing each other down. The Cancer North Node beckons us to a world where we tend to each other and the environment with care, and can build nests of love from our intuitive power. The Full Moon in Capricorn met up with the South Node in Capricorn, urging us to do away with all things related to the use and abuse of power, the tendency to erect walls rather than invite strangers in, and the problematic poison of bureaucracy, hierarchies that benefit the patriarchy, and the selfish accumulation of resources. Looking to your own chart to see where Cancer/Capricorn reside will give more information on what area of life you’re invited to begin anew (Cancer) and where old conceptions of your life need to be done away with (Capricorn).   • The Banshee’s Gift: A Lughnasadh Dream-Vision of Corn and Blood ~ The first harvest was looming, and my dreams became bitter tea steeped too long in golden light, juniper berries, mountain winds, and resurrected childhood memories of visitations from late-summer specters. Bound too-tight by the blood-soaked ropes of unrest and weighted by the ancestral shroud of longing handsewn by my grandmothers, I asked for the medicine of a telling nightmare. I asked for my inflamed wanderer’s spirit to be cooled by a most potent vision, for my molten foolishness to harden into a voluptuous shape of objective beauty for all to behold, and for my boiling inherited grief to steam and rise into a cloud of innocence, whimsy, and awe. I curled to sleep beneath the pines at the fireside and waited for my healing gift, lulled by relentless locusts and intricate frog-speak. I sought those romantic snowscapes and hooded elder guides who wash away my psychic ache with a thoughtful wave of their paper-skinned hand, but I found myself at the edge of a wild and untended corn field where the crows and rats had their way.   • “It’s warm even as evening descends, the sun sinking ever lower, the sky shades of pale pinks, blues and purples. A breeze caresses my warm skin and carries on it the woody yet sweet scent of lavender, thick and heady. Even now the last of the bees drone amongst the purple spikes, perhaps the last stop on their way home. I close my eyes and breathe it all in, for this is surely the essence of summer. This is the first in a series of articles where we will consider a range of well-known plants associated with witchcraft. I’ve chosen lavender to begin with, not only because it is my favourite flower, but also because it represents midsummer perfectly. More than that though, lavender has so many uses, both magically and mundane that it might be considered as perhaps one of the most useful plants to have in the garden. Food & Drink Lavender flowers are edible and are perfect to use in baking. Add the dried or fresh flowers to any basic sponge cake recipe or to biscuit mixes. Make lavender sugar by grinding the fresh flowers together with caster sugar and sprinkle lightly over fruit or use in recipes for cakes and biscuits in place or plain sugar.   • “The July 16th Full Moon eclipse in Capricorn will conjunct the South Node at 24°, and will be disruptive, loud, and dissonant. Patriarchs don’t like being dragged down. Luckily the cosmos is on our side. Finding ways to reject outmoded ways of thinking about and relating to power are our best bet at this point in time. The world needs it, our planet needs it, we all need it if we are to move forward. What’s more is that there are currently five planets retrograde, and so there are more questions than answers at this time. There is no point in putting pressure on yourself to have wisdom, insight, conclusions, or resolution right now. Today, July 7th, Mercury stationed retrograde at 4° Leo. The planet of communication just entered fiery Leo, and now will reverse course, slipping backward through Cancer’s final degrees. Keep an ear out for old conversations, arguments, emails, texts, emotions, and gut feelings you had from June 20th through July 6th, and note what echoes back at you from the void. This is as strong a chance at entering a time machine as we can have, these days. Retrograde is not to be feared, but rather is a chance to meet our problems from another perspective, and in doing so, find alternatives to growth.
