New Moon in Scorpio: An Invitation to Descend

New Moon in Scorpio: An Invitation to Descend

In The Aeneid, the solar hero travels to the underworld. Guided by the sibyl, Aeneas enters the mouth of the earth through the gates of Hades and finds himself in a dark wood. A wood strewn with strange birdsong and rich moss, flowers underfoot that grow in the dark, a deep river, tall pine with boughs graced by souls of those who have passed. It is a realm of dark wonder. When we think of the underworld, we should remember that the ancient Greek word for underworld, Pluto, translates not to darkness but to “richness.” This richness is integral to Pluto, one of the rulers of the sign Scorpio, a sign that finds home in the underworld.

This Saturday, November 18th at 3:42 a.m., we see a New Moon in Scorpio. A fixed, feminine, water sign, Scorpio is famous as the sign of sex, death, secrecy, rebirth, but there is more to this sign than just clandestine sex appeal. Intense in both the heart and the mind, Scorpio is a sign committed to the discovery of truth, lowering herself into the depths in an intimate relationship with authenticity. Psychic as all water signs are, the scorpion senses energetic shifts and calls from other worlds, other lifetimes, other possibilities. Ruled by Pluto and Mars, this is a sign of underworld potency with a highly active sense of justice. Scorpio leads us to truth that can set us free. If a bridge needs to burn to get to that truth, then so be it.

As a new lunar cycle begins, we are encouraged to find ways to start fresh, to reset ourselves. Moving from full to new, the Moon empties herself out, goes dark. It is a time of pause, a place in the cycle where we can collect what we’ve scattered around us in weeks prior. In our culture, we most often praise action and excitement over quiet and solitude. But it is important to remember that we need both parts of the cycle to find balance. And so during the New Moon we must sit with ourselves, go within, pick flowers under the stars in our meditative minds so that eventually we can return to the world with our hearts steady and poised to work.

Find ways to open your eyes and see your situation for what it truly is. Scorpio does not lie. It can never obscure what is right, even if this is extremely uncomfortable. Find healing in these red and blue waters of truth that the scorpion leads you to. Let the darkness of the New Moon encourage you to evacuate from your mind, from your shoulders, from your stomach, from your knees all that weighs you down and troubles you. Banish that which does not serve you, offer yourself up to the universe, devote yourself to this fresh lunar cycle. Pay attention. To yourself, your psychic visions, your dreams. Don’t let the noise of others cloud your judgement—only you know what is right for yourself. Connection with truth promotes healing. The scorpion bathes her claws in the river Styx, she leads you to your intuitive power. Hold her in your mind as you contemplate your role in the universe right now. How you can bring justice to your community via the pursuit of truth, how you can be a more honest and forthright partner, parent, child, student?

Along with the potency of New Moon in Scorpio, other astrological weather abounds. The Moon and Sun are conjunct in Scorpio, both at twenty six degrees. This is a moment where the body and the spirit, the ego mind and the heart, can find their way together, to meet, to rest in each other’s arms. This is an encouraging conjunction for finding ways to heal the body and the heart simultaneously—something that does not seem to come easy these days. Anything from meditation in nature, to taking a bath, to just finding ways to breathe deeply before sleep will be beneficial now.

Pluto forms a sextile angle to Jupiter, urging us to expand our horizons, to find ways to connect with the occult spirit inside each of us. Jupiter, planet of good luck and abundance, sends positive energy to Pluto, planet of endings which lead to new beginnings. Release your pain, sing it out, bury it in the earth, and begin again. Jupiter supports you in this endeavor; there is no failure here.

Mercury and Mars also form a sextile angle to one another, giving us a renewed sense of energy for personal projects that have to do with communication, language, travel. If you were waiting for a surge of energy from the universe to return to a passion project, this is the perfect time to re-devote yourself to your practice. You will feel strong in your body and in your mind. Even if this is a quiet strength, more of a return to planning your next steps than real action, this is perfect as well. Take action on your own terms—this is what these planets want you to do.

Our last and more difficult aspect is Mars square Pluto. Squares often represent tension, repression, blockage. With all of this powerful Scorpio New Moon energy we are longing for a reset, for some quiet, some healthy peace. Mars square Pluto reminds us that we cannot remain inside for too long, that some forces will come knocking that make you leave your bed or your house or your internal mind. Beware of those who are acting rashly, who seek to pull you from your meditation, for they are definitely nearby.

Overall, we must sink in to this moment, for it is only once a month that we are able to truly gather our wits, our emotional energies, our bodies, and say “be still.” The new moon is dark. Allow yourself the time to rest, listen to echoes you hear in the night, and do not fear the darkness. After your eyes adjust, scorpion perched on your shoulder, you will see the richness in the forest of the underworld.
