Full Moon in Taurus: The Bull in the Underworld

For the past week, I have been fixated on the idea of activating my throat chakra. I did anything I could think of—I sought out lapis lazuli, I listened to vibrations attuned to this chakra point, I sang octaves to myself in my car or in my room when no one else was home, I practiced breathing techniques that filled my lungs and reminded me that my throat contained blood and muscle and air. Feeling that resonance of sound in my chest became crucial, and any route to its activation appealed to me.

If you sing loud enough, you feel it not only in your vocal cords in your throat, you feel it in your chest, as well. Sound has a way of perforating rib and muscle, setting ablaze the space around your heart, as though there was a hallway or door in the chest from which sound can pour out. I thought if I sang loud enough, I could awaken myself, or wipe a metaphysical slate clean.

This obsession started after Samhain, as the Moon grew toward fullness in the sign Taurus. Yesterday, after listening to my thousandth throat chakra sound bath, I remembered that Taurus rules the throat and the heart chakra.

Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac. It is an earth sign, a fixed sign, and its planetary ruler is Venus, goddess of harmony, queen of surfaces, amulet of the body. In Taurus we find the cultivation of the senses. The body learns to move, in Taurus. The infant learning that it even has a body at all is Taurus. The body holds its form in Taurus, and in this experience of continence we manage to punctuate life with sensual experience. Taste, touch, smell, hearing, sight, pressure, temperature, vibration, this is all Taurus. Possession is Taurus, being possessed is Taurus. Rectification of concept, of idea and philosophical rigor is Taurus. Stubbornness abounds, as well as a sweet generosity of body and mind, in Taurus.

Songs, early sounds heard perhaps in utero, or in the space where we linger before we’re called to life, pour out from Taurus. I’ve been flooding my house with sound baths, trying to vibrate myself into presence, awareness, solidity. Something about the tremulous sensation of chimes or bowls brings the mind to attention, not to an idea, but rather to the reality that you too vibrate as much as a bowl of bell.

November 12th, 2019 finds us observing the Full Moon in Taurus at 5:34am PST. The Moon is exalted in the sign Taurus. Full Moons are always a time of release, and with the symbolism of the sign, the poetry of this lunation asks us to release excess presence.  Excess possession. Excess holding. Excess energetic weight. We are in the midst of the Sun’s annual trek through Scorpio; the season of engagement with shadow has been trying, at this point. Demanding, even. Taurus and Scorpio form an axis of possession and anti-possession, of day-world sensing and underworld sensing, of furniture and empty room. Cultivation of values can only come when we are no longer dominated by the values of others. This is what the Full Moon is asking us to realize.

Release can indeed be physical. We can purge closets and attics for items to be donated or passed on to loved ones, we can reorganize and box up unwanted gifts from past lovers or old enemies, we can move the physical objects of existence to our hearts’ content. Release can also be energetic, intellectual, emotional, and psychic. Releasing ourselves from other people’s beliefs about us, releasing ourselves from our own limiting mindsets, or finding release from old patterns that have to do with the body, possessions, ideas, or material experience are all key for this lunation.

What are you releasing? Think back to May 4th, 2019. This was the date of the New Moon in Taurus, and marked a moment in time where a new narrative around values and possessions was initiated for you. Can you recall what has shifted since then? This could be a financial breakthrough or breakdown, or perhaps a newfound freedom, or perhaps you’ve hit a wall and need to use this moment to find adjustment. However these themes have manifested for you, this is your own life, your own narrative, and your own golden opportunity to connect with what’s been stirred up for you in Taurean matters.

The Moon will oppose Mercury at 1:51am PST, showing pressure to communicate, to connect, to speak up and out and against and louder than the voices in your head, in your stomach, in your spine—anything that seeks to hold you back. At 7:48am PST the Moon will trine Pluto, helping us to find support in initiating a radical change, one that involves embracing our subterreanean, underworld truths, and using them for harmonious ends. Mars sextiles Jupiter at 10:21am PST, and we are expanding, brave, inventive, and can train our eyes over the horizon for what’s next.

But first, we must make peace with what’s being left behind. Remember that loss of familiarity is indeed a loss to be mourned, but it can also open us up for so much more growth and expansion. In medical astrology, Taurus rules the throat, but in terms of chakra points, it connects with the heart chakra. An opening up of either of these points of the body at this time seems to me a lush and gorgeous way to connect with the emerald, earthen power of Venus-ruled-Taurus. Singing, screaming, narrating, reading poetry aloud, wailing, whispering, breathing with intention—these are all activities to be carried out under the Full Moon. For the sake of breaking free, carving sonic space, and making your own necessary vibrations in this world.
