On Saturday, September 28th, the New Moon in Libra arrives 5° Libra at 11:26am PT. Symbolically, each degree of the zodiac is significant, and carries its own energetic weight. The Sabian Symbol for 5° Libra is “A teacher revealing to their students the foundation of an inner knowledge upon which a new world could be built.” The message here is that the transmission of respect, truth, and progress from teacher to student is a building block of our world. This symbol is part spiritual reminder, part practical magic—to keep growing we must find reverence for the deepest truths within one another.

It is a reminder of our connection, visible or not. Judging from our feelings these days about the world, particularly our precious earthen environment, I would say this symbol is also here to remind us that we need to work together in harmony to keep building our world, as well as to protect it from evils of the past. Welcome to the New Moon in Libra.

The sign of Libra is represented by the image of golden scales. It is the only sign in the zodiac that is not animate. Despite this, we understand that the scales play a pivotal role in any society as an arbiter of balance. Libra is a cardinal air sign, and is ruled by Venus, planet of passion, senses, and possessions. The combination of air and Venus here produces a unique effect. Different from Taurus, a sign also ruled by Venus, Libra seeks to combine the brainy intellectual power of air with the sweet and harmonious taste for beauty that Venus produces. Venus is the goddess of surfaces. Libra blends logic with lust.

As a cardinal sign, Libra is an initiator—the cardinal signs are placed around the wheel to signify periods of seasonal change. The autumn equinox commenced when the Sun entered Libra on September 23rd, thus we are at the beginning of a new season.* As an air sign, Libra functions in the realm of the mind, hovering slightly detached from the solid ground that Virgo knows so well. Libra thrives as an intellectual force. From the idea-oriented space of Libra, we will eventually take concept and spin it into emotional, intuitive, psychic consciousness when the Sun enters Scorpio, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Each lunar cycle comes to us as a pattern of light and dark. Since the Full Moon in Pisces a few weeks ago, we have been witness to the Moon’s continual dimming, her profile becoming more and more minimal, more liminal, in the sky. The few days before a New Moon are a preparation for the “emptying out,” of the arrival of the dark Moon. If the build and ascent to the Moon’s fullness is a process of accumulation and adventure, the period of waning Moon energy asks us to release, purge, and let go. What’s more, is that this is a time of mourning, of grief, and of contact with our own inner dark.

The astrology lately has been difficult, to say the least, as we recently experienced the last square between Jupiter and Neptune (there were three total this year), a monumental aspect that brought great confusion and fantasy to our sense of power, our sense of structure, and our sense of hierarchy. A powerful time for questioning our purpose, but unless you were in touch with this intention, the effect was quite destabilizing. Mercury and Venus’s squares to Saturn have also put pressure on our minds and hearts, making us feel like we may not be worthy of what we desire.

The impact of this is waning now, but still in the air. With the Moon New in Libra, we have a chance to engage a moment of refresh. Consider the themes of Libra—partnership, harmony, compromise, justice, equality, boundaries, and beauty. The New Moon in Libra is here to deliver us the tiniest light that we must grow on our own, deepening our relationship to these concepts. A fresh six-month cycle around these themes will arrive with the New Moon. Track your growth around Libran energies from now through the Libra Full Moon on April 8, 2020, and take note of what part of your chart is ruled by Libra to get more information on how this narrative impacts you.

Upon first glance, it may seem strange to think that we can build towards opulence when the world is in such chaos, but we have to remember that Libra is not here for selfish aims. This sign seeks to steady the scales of justice, to still the movement of the golden plates from one extreme to another. This is a time of extreme upheaval, yes, absolutely. Libra is also a reminder that we cannot exist without one another, and that the give, take, and repeat of relationship lies beneath us all.

Our relationship to ourselves, our lovers, friends, is most obvious. But we also exist in relationship to the earth, the sea, the air. We exist in relationship to structures of power, and the scales have been unbalanced for so very long. Keep this in mind as you set your intentions for harmony within and without this Libra New Moon.

The astrology of the week ahead offers us some energetic shift, as Pluto stations direct on Wednesday October 2nd, Mercury enters Scorpio on the 3rd, and Mars enters Libra that day as well. Pluto’s retrograde has been asking us to familiarize ourselves with the use and abuse of power in our lives. That the youth of this world are in uproar over environmental abuse at this moment in time is no mere coincidence. We will be able to put these reflections into action for the rest of the year, as the planet stations direct.

Mercury in Scorpio will have us all speaking with depth and intensity, precision and truth. Mars in Libra will find us a bit uncomfortable, as Mars is in his detriment here. Approaches to conflict management may be frustrated or timid, so keep a close eye on those hot hearts of yours in October. There are always lessons in these planetary positions, helpful or otherwise.
