According to myth, the underworld is ever-present. The Cumaean sibyl told us that the entrance to Hades is everywhere, but the trick to gaining entrance is to find Prosepina’s desired offering, a tree that bears fruits and branches of gold. After finding the golden bough, we are granted access to the hidden place as the earth yawns open, inviting us to go beneath the surface.
With the Sun in Scorpio and the New Moon in Scorpio approaching, we are at the lip of the hidden realm. As light from the Sun wanes here in the northern hemisphere, we are reintroducing ourselves to our own darknesses. Our shadow, our pain, our nightmares, dreams, and memories are that very same golden bough that Proserpina desires. Entering the void of the realm below requires that we grasp firmly the feelings that lie under our skin, held in a deep well of memory. This is our devotional offering to the goddess of shadow, and the amulet for integration of shadow for us all.
Sunday, October 27th brings us a New Moon in Scorpio. The sky dark and devoid of the Moon’s light, we will pause in darkness, and set intentions for the sake of connecting with what lies beneath the surface.
At 8:38pm PST, the Sun in Scorpio will connect to the Moon in Scorpio at 4°. Scorpio, the eighth sign, is a fixed water sign. Symbolized in triplicate by the eagle, the scorpion, and the phoenix, this sign brings to our awareness the possibility for transformation—that is, if we are willing to embrace the truth of our lives, and in firm grasp with that honest sense of self, engage a sort of immolation of identity, and rise from the ashes.
With Scorpio, we find ourselves in the realm of Dis, Hades, the underworld. Ancient Romans described the place where souls go as a vast forest of pine, encircled by a deep river. Here we can find a metaphor for the power of intuitive exploration (water) that helps us enter our deepest, most fertile realm (psyche as forest).
With the Moon New in Scorpio, we find a moment of intention setting, as we do with all New Moons. The conjunction of the Sun and Moon bring together the energies of self (Sun) and emotion (Moon), blending them together in the sign of the phoenix. This is potent magic in and of itself, but we have other astrological weather to contend with as well.
The Moon will form a bright sextile to Jupiter, planet of expansion, luck, and excess. This happens at 1:22am PST. Perhaps you’ll be sleeping, or perhaps you’ll be out enjoying a night of scorpionic revelry. Either way, this aspect encourages us to continue to reach out in warmth, in joy, and in compassion to others. Perhaps this is a message that expanding into our sense of shadow brings messages, insight, or other wisdom at this time.
Mars will square off with Saturn at 7:30am PST, and this aspect is no fooling around. A sense of limitation or frustration of action is possible, as the planet of conquest (Mars) is put on the defensive by Saturn, the planet of restriction. Keeping our guard up is advised, as is watching our tempers. We may feel pressurized to a point of reaction, so keep your heart protected at this time.
The Moon will also oppose Uranus, planet of eccentric invention, surprise, and progress, at 8:58pm PST. This brings the potential for ground-shaking shock and change, but the feeling of perspective being limited by the dark Moon hampers this energy. Uranus wants us to expand and change, but it may feel hard to understand where our resources are at the moment. Holding firm to your foundation will get you through, but remember to try to make room for something new, should it come barreling your way.
This New Moon provides us opportunities to get deep with our hidden selves. Themes of sexual desire, secrets, kinks, pain, repressed memory, all echo through. Look to your own natal chart and observe which house is ruled by Scorpio to gain more information on how this energy will impact you.
Remember that we are in Mercury’s retrograde shadow period, and that the planet stations retrograde on Samhain, October 31st. It will appear to move backwards, from 27° Scorpio to 11° Scorpio, reanimating conversations, concerns, theories, thoughts, fights, feelings, meet-cutes, and more, that occurred from October 11th – 31st. Keep a close eye on your diaries, my dears. The messages that cycle back to us at this time are doing so with a purpose. Pausing for remembrance, reintegration, rectification, and reassessment* during this time helps focus our attention on what’s coming through.
New Moon well-wishes to you all. I’ll meet you in the underworld.
