Eclipse Season, Retrograde Season: Summer’s Transformative Depths

We can identify this moment as one of chaotic suspension. This week we’re pulled briskly between the New Moon eclipse in Cancer and the Full Moon eclipse in Capricorn, and in this space, the nodes of fate are calling us to abandon the past and leap forward to future. Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto are all retrograde. If you’re not feeling the pressure, the pull, the weight at this point, I have a few questions for you.

On July 2nd, the New Moon eclipse in Cancer clocked in at 10°. Eclipses are not normal lunations. Since ancient times, eclipses have been thought of as bad omens. You can imagine agrarian people out tending their flocks tracking the course of the day by the movement of the Sun. No doubt, the image of a shadow crossing the Sun, or at night, seeing the Moon turn blood red, seemed to indicate a horrifying thing was unfolding in the cosmos.

In our contemporary moment, we know what causes the eclipses, and astrologically, we can understand these events as unpredictable in nature, but highly transformative. There is no manifestation work that can be done in tandem with these soli-lunar events. Rather than work with the universe, the universe works on us.

Eclipses are astrologically significant because they occur conjunct the Moon’s nodes, the nodes of fate. The North Node is the indicator of our karmic path forward, and determined by the place where the Moon’s path crosses the ecliptic, or the path of the Sun. Symbolizing collective energies that must be pursued, the North Node shows us the way forward. It is uncomfortable, difficult, and puzzling, but ultimately it is in our best interest to move in this direction.

Conversely, the South Node talks to us about the karmic accumulated baggage of the past. We are supposed to be releasing this cosmic junk. It’s tired, played out, toxic. The sign the South Node is found in is the place where we must move away from—its time is over.

In November of 2018 the North Node moved from Leo to Cancer (the nodes are always retrograde). With the North Node in Cancer, we are shown that at this moment, the way forward is Cancerian in nature. Cancer is the fourth sign. Ruled by the Moon, this sign is an archetypal symbol of the mother, of our immediate environment, of the space of the home, nurturing, healing in private spaces, and deep intuition. The North Node shows us that we need to connect with Cancerian energy to carve a path forward. Based on the current state of things, I would agree that moving toward a radical matriarchal orientation is a valid and promising plan.

The South Node in Capricorn therefore points us to what we must release. Capricorn ruled by Saturn in its shadow expression (for the South Node is always about shadow), talks to us about the consolidation of power for power’s sake, the accumulation of resources for selfish purposes, and the blindness that oligarchs and patriarchs have to the suffering of vulnerable entities (human, animal, and inanimate beings all). With Saturn and Pluto traveling together in Capricorn for the next year, we are being shown that we desperately need to revamp our approach to social organization. Capricorn and Saturn bring us selfish beaurocrats. The South Node in Capricorn says it is time to reject them for other options.

The July 2nd eclipse in Cancer opened a portal for us, one that we can walk through at this moment. This New Moon finds its highest expression not this summer but rather in January of 2020, with the Full Moon in Cancer. We are being lit up in these ways, exposed to new ways of thinking, healing, processing, and holding space. It is a nurturing North Node, one that is sorely needed at this time.

The July 16th Full Moon eclipse in Capricorn will conjunct the South Node at 24°, and will be disruptive, loud, and dissonant. Patriarchs don’t like being dragged down. Luckily the cosmos is on our side. Finding ways to reject outmoded ways of thinking about and relating to power are our best bet at this point in time. The world needs it, our planet needs it, we all need it if we are to move forward.

What’s more is that there are currently five planets retrograde, and so there are more questions than answers at this time. There is no point in putting pressure on yourself to have wisdom, insight, conclusions, or resolution right now.

Today, July 7th, Mercury stationed retrograde at 4° Leo. The planet of communication just entered fiery Leo, and now will reverse course, slipping backward through Cancer’s final degrees. Keep an ear out for old conversations, arguments, emails, texts, emotions, and gut feelings you had from June 20th through July 6th, and note what echoes back at you from the void. This is as strong a chance at entering a time machine as we can have, these days. Retrograde is not to be feared, but rather is a chance to meet our problems from another perspective, and in doing so, find alternatives to growth. Yes, it’s uncomfortable, but if we were comfortable, we wouldn’t be transforming.

Very cogent piece and elegantly written. Chaotic suspension sounds serene in an oblique way. I keep noticing the quality of sunlight has changed since the solar eclipse, although not visible here, just a passage, yet a phantom moon still passing? Voracious north node in Cancer. Love this for its implications, across from bony Saturn in the sign of starving winter, south node expels
