Full Moon in Cancer: Oceanic Armor, Emotional Renewal

We reach the end and are granted renewal. On this, the last day of the year 2017, we celebrate the turning of the wheel. We look forward to tomorrow, January 1st, where the Full Moon in Cancer arrives at 6:24 p.m., PST. Our Full Moon in Cancer forms a grand trine with Jupiter in Scorpio and Neptune in Pisces, and with all water signs harmonized, we fall headfirst into the deep, fast sea. We are pulled by our heartstrings into the new year, and opportunities for paradigm shifts are offered to us. How will you answer this call to love? With birdsong or crashing symbols? With whispered prayer or shouted manifesto? Where is your utopia? Imagine yourself in it, deeply ensconced in a world of love, support, connectivity, active passion, art, touch, truth. Take that seed from your heart’s mind and plant it somewhere in your world. Let it blossom from your love. We are emerging, all the wiser, from a year of chaos. Equipped with the armor of the crab’s shell, we step into a year where we can fight as warriors of love, seeking to transform our culture for the better. We can save each other from the grimness that abounds.

In astrology, Cancer is symbolized by the crab and ruled by the Moon. In the mythological imaginary, the Moon is connected to themes of the divine feminine, emotionality, psychic and magical creative powers, as well as instability and change. All water signs are connected to the occult. The changing face of the Moon inspired story after story of the erratic nature of those influenced by the Moon (so called “lunatics,” (but let’s be real, the criticism of the Moon’s changing face is a patriarchal slight against the feminine principle)). Cancers are sensitive, emotional people. Their intuition is strong, and will often win out over a more detached, rational approach. Cancer is happiest when in the home, or when sharing experiences around family and friends. A nurturing environment is critically important for Cancer, who needs to feel safe and cared for in order to feel stable.

The crab carries her shell, her home, on her back for her entire life. Cancer can often either be burdened by or in the embrace of their childhood and family life, forming tenacious relationships with their parents and siblings and comparing the rest of the world to these first experiences. Stubbornness abounds. The crab walks sideways rather than forward. Cancers are often indirect in their pursuit of happiness, taking a circuitous route as they navigate the tides of their emotions. Emotional instability can be countered by a creative outlet. Just as the Moon changes shape in her path through the sky, Cancer’s own emotional state will forever be in flux. It is the sign of the mother, the womb, the home.

Tomorrow’s Full Moon in watery Cancer is reinforced by the aforementioned grand trine formed between all the water signs, as the Moon sits in Cancer’s throne, Jupiter and Mars excite Scorpio, and Neptune finds its home in Pisces.  A grand trine is a stable and harmonious aspect pattern formed between three planets. Energy flows easily. With each of the water signs—Cancer, Pisces, and Scorpio—activated, we must consider the themes of water signs in general. The element of water is changeable. It can be gaseous, solid, or liquid. It can overflow, burst dams, transform coastlines. Its absence creates arid desert. Water also connects us to themes of psychic experience, the unconscious mind, the dream, the underworld. Rivers flow above and below ground in fairytale and myth. Water is the element of the soul, the spirit. It is the element most often associated with deep feelings, which, like flowing water, have the power to shape life around us. This is the energy that will be in play for our first Full Moon.

With all of this water flowing over our heads, it is likely that this Full Moon in Cancer will be even more emotive than usual. I believe there is great power here. So often in this world, we are told that feelings are beside the point, that our emotional responses to stimuli or situations beyond our control are irrelevant, that we need to be more hard-nosed, more rational. While we should indeed strive for a balance between feeling and thinking, now is not the time to force that balance. Now is the time to immerse yourself in your emotional reaction to the universe. Let it wash over you. Consider how you have grown these past twelve months. What has changed around you and how have you responded? What have you learned? What have you shed? What continues to weigh you down that needs to be released?

We are encouraged to find our power through expression. Neptune in Pisces is in its rulership, encouraging us to expand our mind through dream, through song, through intoxication or out of body experiences. It is an intense influence, and it is here to remind us that connecting with our imaginations brings insight that the material world cannot. Moon in Cancer is also highly artistically expressive, encouraging us to funnel our emotions—rage or joy, it doesn’t matter what—into some kind of ritualistic artwork. And Jupiter in Scorpio reminds us to acknowledge our own truths, to expose that which is toxic, to purify, transcend.

In the tarot, the sign of Cancer corresponds to the major arcana card The Chariot. This card symbolizes action through a combination of oppositional forces, as a charioteer sits behind two creatures, one black, one white, paused in progress on a journey. The driver wears armor decorated with crescent moons, and water flows behind the car. This calls to mind the power of Cancer—its hardness and softness, its ability to move forward in the world wearing protective armor, while also being blessed by the soft femininity of the Moon and all her powers. Light from the outside world needs to be balanced with the dark comfort of home inside the seashell. We can keep this in mind when trying to find balance in tomorrow’s watery star weather.

As an astrological tidal wave sparkles over our heads tomorrow, we can hold on to some earth to keep us grounded as the planets of the ego/identity (Sun) and love, aesthetic sense, creative expression (Venus) are conjunct in earthy, grounded, serious Capricorn. Venus in Capricorn brings with it themes of practical love, a love that sustains and provides and nurtures through the tangible, rather than the fantastical. With Venus in Capricorn, we should celebrate ourselves for the transformative power of our emotions, of our love, rather than worry over not being enough or too much or however we criticize ourselves in this life. We should be encouraged to connect with what our emotionality and love brings to the table.

Keep your eyes to the horizon, Seekers. On January 2nd, the planet Uranus goes direct, after being retrograde since August 2nd of this year. Uranus is the planet of invention, surprise, innovation, change. It brings with it an electric charge. When it is retrograde, its powers are more muted. When it turns direct, we will feel an opening of the floodgates. Inspiration will strike. Genius will visit you in dreams. Things that you were holding together in bad faith will split apart, ushering chaos in that forces you to make long overdue change. Uranus means progress. Keep alert, for the sake of the future.
