Jupiter Retrograde and The Course of Change

On October 10th, 2017, Jupiter entered Scorpio, embarking on a journey through the sign of depth, the occult, sexual power, and shared resources. Jupiter’s time in Scorpio will bring up long-avoided awakenings, and will force us to make peace with or excise our demons. Our world is one that encourages a glut of “stuff;” we are bombarded by the news, by our phones, by superficial relationships. We fall into patterns that impact our health. We are distracted from loved ones by the demands of work. We all struggle with this in various and manifold ways. Jupiter in Scorpio is here to help you with that.

Scorpio is a sign of great integrity. It searches for the truth in everything, no matter how obscure. Scorpio is ruled by Mars and Pluto, and fears neither conflict nor darkness. Jupiter in Scorpio is a period in which we are encouraged to leave no stone unturned in our search for true and lasting honesty with ourselves. There is great karmic power here for us to dig into, if we are willing.

Since October, it is likely that life has felt extra charged for you. There may have been excess pressure to get things done by various critical deadlines. Your schedule may have felt at a breakneck speed. You may have been faced with some unexpected loss, or other important moments of change. Soul-searching may have brought hurtful truths. As Jupiter is the planet of growth and learning, it is also the planet of excess and can slip into moments of extremity. It may have been hard to remember that this change is in service of your higher self, and that it all is leading you somewhere. With great growth comes pain. Change is sometimes so hard, and Jupiter in Scorpio so badly wants to empower us to grow that it forgets that we are mortal.

Are you longing for a moment to catch your breath? You are in luck, my dear. Now, at a halfway point in Jupiter’s journey through Scorpio, the planet will go retrograde on March 8th. No doubt you are familiar with the other famous retrograde, Mercury retrograde, which often brings worries over things like communication and travel. With Jupiter retrograde we do not have to feel anxious. Instead, we will be given time to reflect on what we have accomplished thus far during this transit. It is a mighty gift, just ahead of the Spring equinox. I welcome it as much as a basket of flowers.

With Jupiter retrograde, the energy will be gentler. Symbolically, the perceived backwards movement of Jupiter signals a break in forward motion. And if Jupiter direct is a waterfall, Jupiter retrograde is a babbling brook. You will be able to coast a little bit thanks to the fruit of your labor from the past six months. We may not find much forward motion, but we will be invited to consider our paths, how far we have come, and what we can do to keep ourselves engaged, healthy, and brave. It is a moment of peaceful, powerful reflection. This retrograde brings to mind The Hermit tarot card—the advice here is to look inward for wisdom, and to contemplate without lavish adornments. Connect to the body, as well as the psyche, to find guidance.

And to touch once more on the energy of Jupiter in Scorpio, we should remember that Scorpio is a highly psychological sign that loves to sink into the depths of the soul. Jupiter stations direct again on July 10th, 2018. Use this time, from March to July, to get cozy with yourself, with your secrets, your hidden desires, your connection to magic or the occult. Be firm and honest with yourself about what you need. Be realistic with yourself about who you are, not who others want you to be. And bury yourself in your own power to find self-admiration. Scorpio is confident that she knows the way forward. Find ways to embrace this deep, powerful archetype to make the most of this period of Jupiter retrograde.

with Jupiterian trumpets,
