New Moon in Cancer: Between Your Breasts Is a Door

On July 12th at 7:48pm, the Moon will be New in cardinal water sign, Cancer, queen of watery intuition. She reigns over what is inward, private, foundational to our homes and to our souls. Each New Moon brings the Sun nestled conjunct the Moon, but this one will be different, as this lunar event also brings us a solar eclipse. The eclipse’s effects will be felt for the next six(ish) months, and carry us forward to a new era of personal awareness, one where we tend more diligently to the inner, private foundations of our public image and success.

This particular eclipse in Cancer is the first of a series of eclipses in Cancer and her opposite, Capricorn. Themes brought up by the two signs will be activated by these eclipses and remain relevant until 2020. We are being given myriad new opportunities to define for ourselves what how our domestic foundations support and enhance our public image and reputation. We cannot function healthily in the public sphere when our personal lives are out of balance. This series of eclipses calls us to enter a new era of cultivating a balance between work and home, career and emotional foundation, the nurturing of public reputation and the cultivation of the intuitive spirit. This is a departure from last year’s eclipse cycle in Leo and Aquarius, where we worked with the balance between the individual ego and the progress of society. The last lunar eclipse in Aquarius on July 27 marks the end of this cycle for the time being.

There is so much baffling energy in the air right now. Six planets have been retrograde—Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto—forcing us to look inward rather than out toward the horizon. Projects we have tried to conceive of in our minds and hearts have only received flickering glimmers of the attention they deserve. This has been a period of start-stop, of distraction, of yet another obstacle coming into our path that we didn’t anticipate properly. It’s enough to make one feel completely nuts, so if you have been feeling crazy, please know that you are not alone. We are all being forced to recalibrate. This is a time for us to make inner change, to get right with ourselves and our priorities, our self-care ritual, our intellectual ritual, our dream ritual, our power ritual, so that when these planets move direct, out of their retrograde phase, we too will move forward with these planets, in strength, and with the proper cosmic armor growing like webs from our hearts.

Just in time for the New Moon/Solar eclipse, Jupiter moved direct on July 10, out of retrograde. A moment of relief. Intellectual projects can now move forward. The energy you have been building up for rectification of injustice is now available to you. Fertility is possible, as opposed to before when its blooms had gone dormant in Jupiter’s retrograde phase. Jupiter is the planet of luck, positivity, expansion, justice, excess. In these themes, we can now make strides forward. If you are feeling unsure, finding a way to connect with the planet (making a mini altar to the deity, for example, is a lovely idea; Jupiter loves purple, wormwood, chamomile, sage, and rosehips, as well as whatever else you have to offer the electric god) is advised. Look at your natal chart and see what house Jupiter occupies. This is the realm that is now open to you, as Jupiter has moved direct.

The New Moon in Cancer is a gorgeous, lush, lunar event. The Moon is ruled by Cancer, and so this is a comfortable alignment for luminary and sign, and the energy here can express itself fully. Cancer rules House 4, the house of the home and foundations of the family, the private domestic things we need to nurture ourselves. In medical astrology, Cancer rules the breasts and stomach, our softer parts which often require gentleness, or the protection of a hard shell.

Psychic sensitivity goes hand in hand with the intense emotionality of Cancer, who often feels before she rationalizes what is in front of her. This is the case with all water signs (which is why I love you all so), but with Cancer, these feelings are rooted in connectivity to the home. Cancer is happiest when she has an artistic outlet. Something that connects her to her body and to the unbridled passion she keeps tucked behind her heart, buried under that tough crab shell.

This New Moon in Cancer centers our intuition. This is the time to get in touch with yourself, your inner child, to ask yourself how you are being nurtured, how you are caring for yourself in your most private moments. Are you tender, or are you harsh? Are you relentlessly critical, or do you allow yourself some softness? Cancer can only thrive where there is a gentle current, no crashing waves for this crab, please. New Moon in Cancer is the time to get clear with yourself about how the foundations of your home set you up for success in the “outside” world, how you define where you belong, how you define family, what makes you feel safe, what helps you heal. Do you get the support you need from the groups you have formed around you? What does love really mean to you, and how do you get at all the corners of it until you are shining gold and full of sound? New Moon in Cancer breaks us open, reminds us that between our breasts is a door to our hearts. Who are you allowing through that portal? How respectful are they of the cathedral of your solar plexus? Who is really listening to you when you sing?

All of these themes require a gentle touch. It is a delicate time, my dears, but at least we are all here together.

We will see cosmic support from Jupiter and Neptune, as the Moon trines both planets, first Jupiter at 8:12am and then Neptune at 12:57pm. Trines are flowing, stabilizing angles between luminaries, encouraging easy communication between the planets involved. With the Moon, planet of emotionality, pleasantly trining Jupiter, planet of fertility and affirmation, we can expect our feelings to take a warm tone. If you are not naturally feeling warm yourself, please remember that this planetary energy is here for you. Moon trine Jupiter is kindly disposition + a fortuitous time for creativity and business. The Moon’s other trine with Neptune, planet of fog, dreams, and psychicness, is lovely for daydreaming, but be careful not to get too carried away! Moon trine Neptune is here to help you imagine a more beautiful future for yourself, as Neptune brings us themes of fantasy and escapism. Make sure whatever intuitive fancies come your way can later be rooted in some earthy reality, my dears, like taking plant cuttings from water to find stability in soil.

This Solar eclipse New Moon in Cancer event is occurring very close to the North Node, and this is a gift for us in terms of manifestation. The North Node is a karmic point in the chart. It talks to us about the path we need to walk in this life in order for our soul to grow. North Node shines a light forward to futurity. With the New Moon and Sun conjunct, sitting close to the North Node,  we can take the visions that come to us and move forward with them. Eschew fear and worry. Banish fear and reluctance. Between your breasts is a door. You have been making promises to yourself for long enough now. Nurture them, bless them, and then let them out into the daylight. You are ready.
