On December 22nd 2018 the Moon will rise full under the sign of Cancer. Cancer is already ruled by the Moon as such, full Moons under this sign tend to feel more intense. The emotions that come to the surface are bigger, deeper, older, and sometimes even ancient. Inspiration strikes harder at this time. Passions are wilder. Dreams are magick and prophetic. Because of the extra sensitivity aroused under a Cancer Moon people tend to stick closer to home and prefer the company of their most cherished and trusted ones.
Instincts are also more accurate under a full Moon in Cancer, but only if you are aware of what you are tuning into. If you are more sensitive than you realize you could be picking up energies from other lives, the past, the future, other worlds, other dimensions, or even energies from other beings. It can be easy to get confused and overwhelmed by such intense energies, particularly if they come with powerful emotions attached. It’s important to know what information and instincts to pay attention to, and what to let go of so that you don’t mistake these messages for your own, or take on quests or even in some cases, fights that are not your own.
2018 has been an emotional war ground for many. Despite the long and twisted shadows in the news, there have been some important and progressive steps forward for humanity this year. But by and large, people are just tired and not sure where to turn. As we prepare for a fast paced earthy 2019, attuning your instinctual and emotional self is vital. The Cancer full Moon is the perfect time to do that.
With the aid of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid (note: not Disney’s version) and Jung’s exploration of the mermaid archetype, this tarot spread will look at your beliefs around love and self-sacrifice. A big theme for my clients this year has been feeling a lack of love and a sense of giving too much of themselves. Combined, these issues lead to emotional and spiritual exhaustion. I know many of them have been wanting to break these patterns for 2019. This tarot spread was designed with that in mind.
Disney sells the Little Mermaid as a story about how important it is to give your all for love. The original tale had Ariel fall in love with a human she didn’t know, left her home and loving family and friends, gave up her voice and her gift to enter a world of pain. When she met the prince he ultimately rejected her. She is offered a choice: kill the prince and return to living as a mermaid or die the following morning. Ariel can’t kill the prince so the next morning dissolves into sea foam whereby the daughters of the air show her grace and welcome her to their realm to become an air spirit whereby it’s said she is gifted a human soul.
Love is important but sacrificing all of the other love in your life—your friends and family, for romantic love is unhealthy. And while it is important to pursue love, true love will not ask you to sacrifice all that you are, it won’t ask you to give up your own gifts, strengths, voice, home and security. It won’t ask you to relinquish your boundaries. Pinning all your happiness on another person, whether that love is requited or not, is a wildly unwise idea. However, our society normalizes and romanticizes self-sacrifice for love. Once humans believe in sacrificing themselves for one cause it becomes increasingly easy to convince them to keep sacrificing themselves. As you can imagine, this becomes a toxic spiral.
But if you can become aware of this pattern of self-sacrifice and find space to look at it critically, you can start working on it and thereby healing. However, it is important to be gentle on yourself.Be forgiving and kind. I am yet to meet a single client that doesn’t hold self-sacrificial beliefs about love on some level. In fact, there is some evolutionary advantage to being self-sacrificing at certain times. But starting to work on this area of yourself will allow you the choice over when and how you might decide to be altruistic and self-sacrificing towards to others. It will be a choice rather than a duty. By being aware of your patterns and beliefs around self-sacrifice it is less likely someone can manipulate that aspect of yourself and therefore, it is less likely you will lose yourself to another person. This is how you turn self-sacrifice into self-care.
The Cancer full Moon is a wonderful time to work with the energy of the mermaid. Emotions are high and welcoming, intuition is open, and the air is full of magick. A Cancer full Moon also comes with a lot of healing energy. This combination of energies come together to create a warm cradle of night, the perfect night to perform such an important tarot spread. Just remember to be gentle on yourself.
Things you may want to think about including in your tarot ritual: the colours white and pink, rose oil or rose flowers, shells, and a small bowl of salt water.

Mermaids are magick, sensual, wild, sensitive and beautiful. They swim and slip into the deep, dancing with the black sharks and star lilies.Their mouths are full of suns and their hair is on fire, flames slink through the waves and moon ripples as they crash onto the shore. They pretty their beds with bones of pretty sailors and sing up storms as they dream of sex and murder, draped over skulls and pearls.
Mermaids are brave and powerful, they know the hearts of men, they know the heart of water. Wild witches of the waves. They are equally happy in the light and the dark. They are tricky and slippery, forever moving, they are natural shapeshifters and veil-walkers. Time means nothing to them. They are a mystery unto themselves. They can play at love and war, balancing a trident in one hand, and a babe in the other all the while giving you the come hither. But like any being, they can fall prey to their own weapons, their own songs.
Mermaids know that love will always prevail. Mermaids hold the ability to tempt and lure because of their innate sex magick. But sometimes this magick can turn on them so that they become as obsessed and blind as any love-sick sailor. Even a mermaid can be coaxed into giving up all that they have in the name of
It’s true, love is vital. Some say love is everything. Therefore, love is always worthy of careful of consideration in terms of costs and benefits before deciding whether to pursue it or not. Learn from the mermaids, learn to use water and feeling to gain clarity rather than letting yourself get overwhelmed by obsession and fantasy. Sacrificing all that you have and all that you are for love will never have the fairy-tale ending that Disney promises. And if you find yourself caught by the mermaid’s song again, and if you fall back into the pattern of self-sacrifice, that’s okay, that’s entirely human. But when you do catch yourself, stop self-sacrificing forgive yourself, but stop the pattern. Pull back, return to the ocean, strive for clarity and balance again. Love might be everything, but you are worth even more than that.
