The Corruption of Tata’s & Yaya’s

Pomba Gira Initiate

A lot of us find Quimbanda independently.

Exu and Pomba Gira steer you towards them like adults shepherding school kids on a field trip; a symbol here, a mention there and, boom, you’re looking to further your studies, maybe even initiate.

Unless you’ve got that mate round the corner who knows someone, your first port of call is Google, Facebook and Instagram to attempt to find a spiritual home that you trust. This home should be filled and led by people who empower you, encourage your connection with Exu and Pomba Gira and want you to succeed. You should be able to be at your most vulnerable with these people, tell them your mistakes and ask stupid questions – otherwise there is nothing authentic there.

You have to feel safe. Have to.

Working with Pomba Gira and Exu involves you being led down a path that will both rip you apart and build you up at the same time. We lie to ourselves and it’s their way to bring those lies front and centre. You have to feel supported during this process as it often leads to confusion and the potential of taking a very destructive path.

Denial isn’t well tolerated.

Anger is building, especially with Pomba Gira, about what is going on behind closed doors in a few houses. The Tata’s and Yaya’s have turned into the oppressors; stealing, humiliating, hoarding and abusing their initiates all whilst uttering her and her consort’s name.

She is fucking livid.

I dare not ask Exu what he thinks.

Pomba Gira and Exu and spirits of night and fire. Their offerings heavily rely upon alcohol and cigarettes. Quimbanda is a cult.  The Spirits know our dark side and aren’t offended by it.

However.

Quimbanda is not an excuse for you to indulge all your depravities; it’s sacred and the work these spirits do with and for us is astonishing. They are a blessing.

So getting hammered in your Quimbanda House every Friday night and sticking your tongue down someone’s throat after singing a few Ponto’s to get the Spirits attention is bullshit. That is ALL you my friend.

The Kiumba’s will sure take notice though.

Pomba Gira’s Hit List

Coercive Sexual Relationships

It is wholly inappropriate for a Tata or Yaya to have a sexual relationship with an initiate, let alone multiple.

If a couple enter a house and one advances quicker than another, not a problem. If two initiates have a relationship, in theory, that’s their business. If a Tata or Yaya strikes up a relationship with an initiate the power balance is way off.

Some will jump up and shout ‘but if they are all adults what’s the problem?’

And those people have clearly never been on the receiving end of a power imbalanced relationship.

What happens when the relationship fails? Who do you think is thrown out of the house? Who suffers? If the break up is hostile who will people believe? Who is going to run around doing things they don’t want to because they have been told that’s what the spirits want? It sure isn’t going to be the Tata.

Saying ‘no’ to someone who has ALL the influence on your progression in Quimbanda isn’t going to be easy, and no one should ever have to be in this position.

As the leader of a house full of people who look to you for guidance and help, in their weakest moments when they are at rock bottom, feeling let down by their spirits a Tata’s job is to empower THEM not take that power for themselves.

Not for the Initiate to feel indebted.

This also causes a whole lot of jealousy and division within the house particularly from other initiates who are either envious or unhappy with the relationship. Obviously there will favouritism. ‘Maybe now she’s dating the Tata, Exu will like her better. Maybe Tata is showing her things we don’t do in the Cabula!?’

You can bet your ass he is. But they have nothing to do with Quimbanda.

I have no doubt there is a random Initiate and Tata/Yaya relationship out there that has been going for 10 years (I really hope so). This relationship will have been kept out of the Cabula and the Tata/Yaya won’t have gone through 8 Initiates beforehand.

A Cabula isn’t a sexual partner meet ‘n’ greet nor a cattle market for the Tata/Yaya to choose from.

Know your worth Initiates – their interest in you is only fleeting.

Blocking Access to the Spirits

In some houses the Tata’s and Yaya’s are ensured they are put on a pedestal. They hoard the spirits and attempt to deny access to certain Exu and Pomba Gira by telling people that the Exu in question only ever talks to Tata’s.

A mere practitioner doesn’t merit their attention.

They ain’t the fucking Queen of England people. These spirits are your friends.

With respect and knowing, approach who you like. There are no Gatekeeper’s in Quimbanda.

The first spirit I ever contacted myself was Exu Capa Preta – a little scary but the guy helped and did the work I asked of him.

Crack on.

This is all about your Tata/Yaya feeling self important and hugely inflates their egos. ‘Oooo look at Tata Campina! He is the only one that Exu Lucifer talks to! He must be so powerful!’

No. Exu Lucifer is a delight – if you have good reason and wish to, talk to Exu Lucifer. Do.

Pomba Gira and Exu are fully against blocking access. Only they will decide with whom they speak.

It’s actually pretty insulting to them; imagine your five year old little sister telling your friends they can’t speak to you!?

No one dictates Pomba Gira’s or Exu’s relationships.

Humiliation and Degradation

This has no place in a Cabula at any point, Or you are simply being ruled and this sure as fuck isn’t Game of Thrones.

Tata’s and Yaya’s say how things run within the Cabula and can have a (not a given) deeper relationship with the Spirits but they have no more power than you when it comes down to it. They aren’t gifted with superpowers or some weird eighth sight.

They are men and women who are supposed to dedicate their life to Pomba Gira, Exu and the teachings of Quimbanda. To heal and empower others whilst coming from a place of openness and honour.

There is no honour in forcing people to crawl on the floor or sit in the corner facing the wall.

If you find this in a house – leave and never look back. You will never attain Tata or Yaya in this house as that will threaten the current regime. That would dilute their power.

In addition – another way the power card gets pulled is when you have paid for something and you never get it. This is not the mark of an honourable, grounded, humble Tata/Yaya – their word clearly cannot be trusted.

Too much Man, Too much Drama

Quimbanda is all about balance – your Tata/Yaya should not simply be focused on either Exu OR Pomba Gira. You need both. The Spirits need both or the house becomes unstable.

Straight men on the whole, tend to be closer to Exu (meaning Exu is closer to them), whereas women tend to have Pomba Gira around us far more. LGBTQI it varies on the person and their soul. Simple. Case by case basis.

Most houses are run by men therefore Exu tends to be at the front of the queue, and because this is who the Tata know’s best, they sometimes stick with the comfortable and kind of placate (good luck with that!?) Pomba Gira but she isn’t held in as high esteem as Exu.

Which is ridiculous.

You’ll also find in these houses that the Tata is a misogynist anyway or has some not very deeply buried Mother issues.

These are also the houses that are filled with conflict, deceit and treachery. There will be constant talk of bindings, banishings, attack, destruction and power. Protection, Protection, Protection.

Kind of got to ask yourself, why that amount of protection is needed.

Meanwhile…

Who’s healing shit?

Calling all Healers

Quimbanda isn’t a cult of war, it’s a cult of healing and transformation.

So if your Yaya or Tata isn’t teaching you about healing the physical, spiritual or situational they aren’t giving you the full story.

A Tata who only focuses on obtaining power and protecting their own, isn’t a Tata at all. They are an insecure, unhappy guy.

Pomba Gira and Exu can help with disease, mental health, animals, children, unhappy homes, long term health conditions, trauma, and soul division. Imagine if all Houses used them for this rather than righting perceived wrongs and ‘looking well hard’.

I find the lay person’s attitude to Quimbanda and Vodun can be similar – the media portrays Vodun as just a system of curses and blood. Vodun is fighting it’s way out of this and is succeeding.

Sadly some Quimbandeiros adore being seen as this powerful ‘sorceror’ who can throw curses left, right and centre to bring a man to his knees. So they are happy with the cult being seen this way and will gladly confirm that misinformation.

When really, what these Quimbandeiros need is just a good psychologist.

And maybe some meds.

Conclusion

A Tata and Yaya are representatives of Pomba Gira and Exu – if they are deceitful, coercive and dictatorial, what do you think of your Spirits?

Find a good one. Pomba Gira and Exu will help.

    The basics of Pomba Gira

Comparing Pomba Gira to another spirit to help you make sense of her or syncretising her is foolish. There is nothing more frustrating than someone saying Ezili Dantor and Pomba Gira are the same. It is an insult to both of them, they are both exceptionally powerful SEPARATE women.

And, honestly, women aren’t supposed to make sense.  We are complex creatures, (ideally) ever evolving to become exactly who we want to. Sovereign.

So putting female spirits in a neat little understandable box is almost throwing down the gauntlet. Pomba Gira will burn your box to the ground.

What Pomba Gira can help with – pretty much anything if you pick the right Pomba Gira.

    However…

Be aware that Pomba Gira can be a very blunt spirit, sometimes with the creepiest, meanest sense of humour ever, other times she is a complete doll. It depends on which Pomba Gira you are working with, and it truly pays to know, that way you can tailor your approach.
